“It’s like breakfast served on the verandah of a sweet B’n’B in the English countryside…”

I bought Bosc Pears because they were inexpensive and different. Trying new things is what I thrive on! I have since discovered, Bosc pears are European. ‘Beurre Bosc’ – originally from France or Belgium. Perhaps that’s what attracted me to them when I first found them nestled in between the bright green Packham and William. 😊

See, if you know me, you know I am a European wanna-be, though I am content to simply weave European ‘anything’ into my Australian life. So, if there’s a pear that will transport me to the pretty countryside of the EU for breakfast… I’m there!

Even if just might be the most unpretty pear in the world.

Beurre Bosc Pears

This ugly but sweet pear has a thin body, long tapered neck and is famous for its brown, russet skin. Its white flesh is crisper, smoother and firmer than more common pears (here in Australia) such as Williams or Peckhams. This makes Bosc a FANTASTIC choice for cooking pear tarts and pastries, poached pears and anything ‘pear’ when you want the fruit to keep its shape (and not turn to mush).

This inexpensive breakfast brings together two humble ingredients – porridge oats and bosc pears to create a sense of cosy luxury at your kitchen table, or wherever that spot is at home, where you catch the morning sun.

A simple but sophisticated breakfast.

TIME: 10 minutes
RATING: Easy

Ingredients (per person)

1 Bosc pear (the ugly brown ones at the supermarket)
1/2 Tablespoon maple syrup (more if you like sweet)
1 Tablespoon water
1/2 Cup oats
1 Cup milk (you can use milk powder)

TURN IT INTO POWER PORRIDGE! (Per person)
1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
1/2 Tablespoon toasted nuts (walnuts, almonds or pecans)
1 Tablespoon LSA meal (ground linseed, sunflower seeds and blanched almonds) and/or Gentle Fibre from Woolworths

Serve with yoghurt (optional).

Method

1. Slice the pear thinly leaving the skin on but removing the core. Place in a saucepan with maple syrup and water. Simmer over medium heat until soft.

2. Add oats and milk to another saucepan and cook, stirring regularly until thick and cooked through. ~ If using chia seeds add them to the oats in the last few minutes of cooking. If you add them any earlier and they will create a gel-like texture. Alternatively, sprinkle them over the top as a garnish!

3. Serve! Add cooked oats to your favourite bowl and top with the softened pear and ALL the juices! Sprinkle with toasted nuts if you like. You can even add a dollop of yoghurt.

4. Enjoy in the sun with your favourite breakfast beverage. Good company won’t go astray either… Bon appétit!
